About Therapy

Overwhelmed… Unable to Engage

You know you are stuck – cycling endlessly. The pain and the disruption to your life are excruciating; you have tried everything. Sometimes you achieve a brief respite… breathing room. But wait! It’s gone again. And you end up right back where you started.

Every one of us has big feelings. Every one of us can get trapped in our thoughts and terrible memories. This sometimes happens in response to a major life event and sometimes simply because we are human. And no one teaches us what to do with them! Why didn’t we learn this stuff in school?

A Trusting Relationship

Therapy is a collaboration, a partnership where I bring my knowledge and experience to the table, AND you bring yours. You are the expert on you! You know your life, what it’s like to be you, where you are, and where you want to get. And you know better than anyone.

As we get to know one another, we’ll create a relationship where you are seen, heard, and accepted. Where you are safe to be 100% you and to share your expertise in you. That relationship is the basis of all successful therapy, and that means you will not be alone in this.

A Conversation

Therapy is a conversation, but a conversation like no other.

Talking to friends or family, even the best of the best, is not therapy. In therapy, your well-being is our sole focus. You do not need to worry about others.

We can go as slow or as fast as you want. I will not judge you. You can bring ALL of you to this conversation.

Unique to You

We personalize therapy to you, your personality, and your concerns. You are unique and need an individualized approach when things are not going well.

We will start by looking at where you are and where you want to be. Together, we will increase your understanding of yourself and how you got here. My experience and training provide us with many options going forward. This may include EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or learning specific skills and tools.

You ARE doing things that work for you – whether you know it or not. You have incredible internal resources. In our work, we will uncover those and build on them.

And Then… Reconnecting

Through our work together, you will begin to rule those emotional upheavals that are ruling you now. You will calm yourself and be more effective. You will trust yourself knowing you have what you need.

You will be free to connect to your life.

ABOUT LAURIE

Getting Real with Myself

I know what it’s like to be out of touch and have to go looking for yourself.

As a young adult, I found myself living a life I had not chosen. This realization started as a feeling I didn’t understand, a slight sense of apprehension, and ultimately became so strong I couldn’t ignore it.

Something was not right, but I didn’t understand what. I was forced to take a long, hard look at where I was and how I’d gotten there.

I tried to solve it on my own, but I just couldn’t. I needed help. Realizing this was my first big step. Feeling vulnerable and afraid, I found a therapist.

In therapy, I learned that noticing and caring for myself was necessary, not selfish. It became clear that creating a life that was meaningful and true would mean paying attention to my wants and needs. I learned that I had to act on what that attention told me, not just observe it.

Therapy was a lot of work, and it was scary work. It involved making choices and decisions that were all mine, which didn’t always please other people. With support, I dug deep to understand myself and my emotions. That meant I had to do something alarming! I had to feel my feelings, even the big, bad, ugly ones. I had to get comfortable with them so that I could hear what they were telling me.

The hard work was worth it. I moved closer and closer to the life I desired.

In my 30s, I changed direction completely. Leaving behind science and business, I went back to school to become a therapist myself. I have had no regrets.

My Life Outside the Office

I’m a human being who also happens to be a therapist. I’m a lot like you. Some things I do swimmingly well. Some things will always be a work in progress.

I can be serious, even intense. I also love to laugh, and we will laugh together in therapy.

If I had space and time, I would have fish, dogs, cats, horses, birds, and maybe even a goat or two. As it is, my husband and I live with our only pet, our rescue cat Sadie.

Like most folks in Colorado, I love the mountains and escape to them regularly. I also love the plains – the grassy distances. So expansive!

When I’m not working, you’ll find me hiking, biking, skiing, spending time with my family and friends, or dabbling in the garden.

I’m amazed by Mother Earth and all the creatures we share with her. That is a very spiritual thing for me and a healing thing, too. My heart can break when I think about how precarious it all is right now.
